The American Tool & Die Story
Most stamping shops do one of two things well. They run high-volume production and send tooling out, or they build beautiful dies and can’t run the parts. American Tool and Die has done both since 1984, under one roof in Swansea, South Carolina.
The plant runs more than 55 presses with capacity reaching 600 tons — enough to stamp heavy-gauge structural parts in production quantities. Alongside them sits a full-service tool and die shop building progressive, transfer, and line dies in house, supported by CNC machining, wire EDM, and custom machine building. That combination is the point. A customer can bring a print, a sample part, or a problem, and ATD can design the tooling, prove it out, and run production without the part ever leaving the building.
It also means ATD can start further back than most suppliers. If the original drawings are gone — a common situation with legacy parts — the team can reverse-engineer from a source part and cut new tooling. When a die needs correction mid-program, the shop that built it is fifty feet from the press.
That capability is why ATD manufactures the full New Deal Trailer Parts line, and why customers outside the trailer industry bring their stamped and machined components here as well. Metal forming rewards experience: knowing how a particular grade will spring back, where a die will wear first, what a part will do on its two-hundred-thousandth hit. ATD has accumulated that knowledge over decades of running its own tooling on its own presses.
Parts are made in the USA and shipped from Swansea to manufacturers, fabricators, and distributors nationwide.
